Ag/AgCl electrodes have long been recognized for their superior stability in sensing bioelectric signals.
The electrochemical properties of Ag/AgCl are such that recorded biopotential waveforms are faithfully reproduced.
The main feature making Ag/AgCl electrodes superior to other metals is their low offset potential. The large offset potential generated by other metal electrodes in a biomedical situation may be unstable, non-linear or unpredictable. Long-term changes in offset potential can appear as baseline drift and short term changes can be seen as increased noise.
By comparison, Ag/AgCl electrodes introduce minimal offsets. As the AgCl is ionized, Cl ions from the electrode are exchanged for similar ions in the tissue or electrolyte. Under these conditions AgCl is stable regardless of the direction of current flow.
Ag/AgCl electrodes are available in several standard configurations and custom configurations are available upon request.
